What Is a Hybrid Mattress?

A hybrid mattress combines an innerspring mattress with a foam mattress, giving you the comfort of foam and the breathability of innerspring. Typically, a hybrid mattress consists of a layer of foam, latex, polyfoam, and microcoils that’s layered over an innerspring support layer made of metal coils that vary in thickness, type, and number. It’s an incredibly comfortable mattress designed for a wide variety of sleepers. So if you’re thinking about shopping for a new mattress, consider a hybrid.

Types of Hybrid Mattresses

Not all hybrid mattresses are the same. The main types of hybrid mattresses vary on what the manufacturer uses for the foam layer:

  • Memory foam. This material contours to the body and is particularly good at relieving pressure in sensitive areas.

  • Latex. This material is responsive and will shape according to the sleeper’s body.

  • Polyfoam. This material is thicker and more supportive than memory foam and latex and provides a firmer mattress.

  • Microcoils. This material is made from tiny metal coils designed to provide support.

Underneath the foam layer, most hybrid mattresses have Marshall coils that are wrapped individually in fabric. That lets each coil move independently, which makes it less likely to disturb a sleeping partner when you move or get in and out of bed.

Hybrid vs. Foam vs. Innerspring Mattresses

The classic mattress is an innerspring with metal coils inside. This type of mattress is great at keeping sleepers cool and creating a breathable sleep surface. It can be bouncy but not always great at matching your body and relieving pressure. Then came the all-foam mattress that’s typically made up of layers of memory foam, polyfoam, or latex to create a comfortable sleeping surface that perfectly fits to the sleepers’ bodies. However, a purely foam mattress often lacks edge support and responsiveness.

A hybrid mattress is a combination of the two, designed to combine the benefits and reduce the downsides of foam and innerspring mattresses.

Pros and Cons of Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses can be a great middle ground between foam and innerspring mattresses, but they’re not a perfect fit for everyone. These are the main advantages of choosing a hybrid mattress:

  • You get foam’s pressure relief and responsiveness and the support of innersprings

  • Since there’s a variety of materials that can be used in a hybrid mattress, there’s a hybrid for many sleep styles and needs

  • There are a lot of variety of mattresses, so there’s one for every budget

However, it might not be a great mattress for people who sleep hot because even having only a memory foam layer can trap heat.

How Long Does a Hybrid Mattress Last?

A hybrid mattress will generally last around 10 years, the same length as a foam mattress. Both foam and hybrid mattresses last longer than an innerspring mattress. The main way to help your hybrid mattress last its full lifespan is to take care of it properly. Cover it with a mattress cover or protector to shield it from wear and tear, to keep your mattress lasting for years.

How to Choose a Hybrid Mattress

When mattress shopping, how do you know what kind of hybrid mattress will suit you? Consider these two factors to help you pick the right level of firmness and the perfect foam layer.

Sleeping position

  • Side sleepers usually want a thicker comfort layer to contour and cushion the shoulders and hips.

  • Back sleepers want a higher level of support to avoid sinking too far into the mattress, and zoned coils can help provide that.

  • Stomach sleepers often prefer latex and polyfoam cores for a balance of support and comfort.

Body type

  • Sleepers under 130 pounds usually need a softer comfort layer for pressure relief.

  • Sleepers 130–230 pounds usually need a balanced mattress with equal parts comfort and support.

  • Sleepers over 230 pounds usually need more coil support to avoid sinking into the mattress.
